Don't you think it's fascinating what has happened to the em dash?
I remember being told to use an en dash for the first time for numbers in the first agency I worked in. It sparked such an intrigue as my whole education I hadn't encountered these hyphen variations before.
I also learned about the em dash at that time, but rarely did I see it being used, even in content from the US.
Now, fast forward to 2025 and they are absolutely everywhere, although, it carry's a deeper meaning. It's generally a sign of something…
To those already aware, you know this screams AI. Synthetic content generated by a computer. Now that doesn't mean it's bad, but if you are trying to connect to other humans in an authentic way, it's something to at least consider (even if it's simply manually removing them before you post).
It's amazing how incredible humans are at recognising patterns, even if they aren't conscious they have noticed it, it always has an impact on their experience.
I have a feeling human made content, mistakes and all, will be making a real big comeback.
Have you noticed a different feeling when reading content with em dashes since they have become so prevalent? Maybe it's the use of emoji's as bullets?
I would love to hear your thoughts!
